I never thought I would say this, but I am actually looking forward to the day when I can proudly sport a head of silver hair. A few weeks ago, my son and I visited the De Young Museum in San Francisco. We spent some time admiring the gold and extravagance of Ramses II, an ancient Pharoah. As we were leaving the exhibit, we made our way down to the cafeteria. That's when I saw her.
She was a beautiful, grey-haired mature woman drinking her simple tea, looking relaxed and effortlessly graceful. In that moment, I suddenly realized that I no longer wanted to hide my own greying hair when it comes. Instead, I want to embrace the natural process of aging with grace and dignity. It was a time of dramatic hairstyles, bright clothing, luxury timepieces like the Rolex, and automobiles. It was a time to see and be seen. Naturally, that meant a focus on personal appearance. It was also a period when people began to realize the value of health and fitness. Overall, people in the 80s were much more health-conscious than they had been in previous decades. They realized that taking care of their bodies was important not only for their health but also for their quality of life.
Aerobics became a popular way to get in shape, thanks to Jane Fonda. The '80s were about big hair, big shoulder pads, and big aerobics classes. Jane Fonda was one of the first celebrities to jump on the fitness bandwagon, releasing a series of workout videos that became immensely popular. As more and more people began to appreciate the benefits of exercise, aerobics classes sprang up all over the country. The 80s were also the era of the "power suit," and many women began to see aerobics as a way to get in shape for their professional lives and combat the stresses of climbing the corporate ladder. The typical aerobics outfit consisted of a leotard, leg warmers, and a pair of high-top sneakers, often with a headband or bow. This 80's icon is still going strong today as an accomplished actress, and her original workout videos still available for purchase. Our family had a few that we watched in rotation. They weren't just a workout, they often included a bit of storytelling and comedy.
If you grew up in the '80s, then you remember how popular Jazzercise was. It was the perfect combination of cardio and dance, set to some of the best 80s workout music. You could burn calories and have fun at the same time. It was the best of both worlds. Even though Jazzercise is no longer as popular as it once was, it's still a great workout. At some point, Jazzercise evolved into Zumba and U-Jam, which added elements of Latin Salsa, Reggaeton, and Hip Hop. They both follow the same premise – that working out can be fun.
Tae Bo was introduced and quickly became popular for its intense workout routine. Tae Bo combined martial arts and boxing, promising a more intense workout than just aerobics. Music also began to play a bigger role in these classes, with 80's and 90's classics like "Eye of the Tiger" and "Pump up the Jam" getting people pumped up for their workout. Tae Bo quickly became popular, thanks to its intense routines and motivating music. The rise of Tae Bo and the growing popularity of UFC and Mixed Martial Arts paved the way for other formats like Body Combat which uses Muay Thai and Capoeira and created the rise of boxing gyms.
In the 1980s, power yoga and Pilates were all the rage. Power Yoga is based on the Ashtanga style which was created by Beryl Bender Birch in 1984; it became popular thanks to NYC modern dancers Martha Graham who used these movements for rehabilitation after an injury during their performances.
Pilates originated when Joseph Pilates developed exercises that would help people recover more quickly following surgery or other physical trauma. He became a stalwart in the NYC ballet community. With the help of Carola Trier, one of his students, he opened a studio where people could come and learn these new exercises. Celebrities like Madonna, Sting, and Christy Turlington were all fans of Pilates.
In the 1970s Pilates moved from NYC to Hollywood, and the celebrities followed. Ron Fletcher's studio in Hollywood was regularly visited by elite athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLS, NHL, and Olympians. Fletcher's students included Cher, Barbra Streisand, and Anthony Perkins. Fletcher's work was the inspiration for what is now known as "The Pilates Method."

It's easy to forget that we need self-care in our lives. As women, we are notorious for taking care of everyone else but ourselves. We put so much pressure on ourselves, and it can be hard not have the energy or emotional capacity for anything else but getting through each day with some semblance of sanity intact.
The point is, selfcare is for everyone. And we all need it. So how do you make sure you're getting more of it? Here are a few selfcare tips to keep in mind.
Are there any activities that you simply lose track of time doing? We're not talking about endless Instagram scrolling. We're talking about joyful things that give you a new and fresh perspective. Art has a way of doing that for people. So does spending time with animals.
Do you have a hobby? If you do, GREAT! If you don't, it might be time to pick one up. But beware! Don't fall into a trap. Lots of people feel they have to be "good" at something in order for it to be worthwhile. Let go of that nonsense immediately. Do you like to write? Boom. You're a writer. Do you like to bake? Boom. You're a baker. And so on and so on. Pick up something new and just do.
Schedule time for selfcare. it's really easy to feel like you are neglecting your responsibilities. The laundry will get folded eventually. That email thread can wait.

I'm talking about committing to working out consistently, so the new you can be happy and healthy! As women in our 30's, we are still young enough to try some new things. We want an active lifestyle but don't want to sacrifice our feminine curves. You need workouts that are going to make you strong. It can be hard for us because we're often juggling work with kids and all those other responsibilities life throws at us these days. The good news is there are great fitness routines out there for busy moms and dynamic women who have no time for crazy workouts.

Maintain that youthful glow by incorporating some exercise into the mix. Here are some great routines for you:
Yoga. We all know yoga as a restorative process but it builds strength like crazy. Regular practice will tone every muscle in the body while increasing flexibility, strength, balance & coordination
Cardio Step Aerobic Music Videos. (YouTube has tons!) I know I know, sounds like Jane Fonda but if music is something you love, why not use it to stay healthy? Getting your heartrate up on a regular basic helps regulate everything from your appetite to your sleep.
Jogging on Low Traffic Roads. There's very few workouts better than a good run. There's a reason most people jog in nature, and it isn't just because they're trying to get from point A to B faster! Taking time for yourself outside of work or social pressures can really help your mental health too - if you need any more convincing take into account that running has been shown over studies by scientists around the world as having an immense positive effect on stress levels among other things.
Bike riding around town. Ditch the stationary for once and get outside. Biking IRL is an excellent way to get fit as well as fuel a sense of adventure. Biking around town is a great way to get some fresh air and see your surroundings. It's also an excellent workout, which can be fun for both exercise fans as well as those looking to explore new areas!
What to eat before and after workouts:
Follow these two simple rules to get the most out of your workouts.
In the morning Drink 8-12 glasses water.
An hour before working out eat 25 grams/kg body weight protein + 50g carbs (usually 20 minutes prior.)
Post workout - same thing but switch up with some fruit or vegetables.
When we were in our teens and 20's, we stayed active as just a part of life. Now into our 30's and beyond, we are building a foundation for how we want life to be lived well into our older years. Weight loss may not be the destination, but overall health, strength and flexibility are definitely at the top of the list.

They both have an intense passion for their sport, but they recognize that there is more to life than sports alone and need time take care of themselves.
Mental health and wellbeing is important. Although most of us aren't professional athletes, we can still feel like society's expectations on young women can rob us of our joy. The stress of educational attainment, finding a high-paying career and a spouse can feel overwhelming.
Mental health is not just a luxury for the privileged. Although all people have different access to mental resources, we can each still practice more agency and self-autonomy in our lives. Women especially need safe spaces where they talk about their problems and find strategies on how to cope with stressors that may come into play during their life journey.
Studies have shown that the time we spend on self-care is not just about indulgences like bubble baths and massages. Although these are great, true selfcare is much more. It's important to take care of your mental health, which means making time for yourself! By scheduling “me time” you are creating space a VIP, you! You deserve time for yourself! That is the best way to keep your mental health in check. When you make a point of setting aside some "me" time every day, it will be easier to find peace and calm amidst all that life throws at us on its daily quest for chaos.
It can be hard to express yourself and your feelings but it's important because there are so many benefits. You don't have to worry about being judged, you'll feel better after talking with someone else who understands how you're feeling, and it may help get over some of the obstacles that are preventing progress in life. Check with your employer’s healthcare plan for resources. Talk therapy is one tool for self-expression that has been proven effective in treating a variety of mental illnesses like depression or anxiety. There's apps like Calm which offers guided meditation as well as Talkspace where they connect therapists through text messages on their smartphones.
