A New Perspective on Going Gray
I never thought I would say this, but I am actually looking forward to the day when I can proudly sport a head of silver hair. A few weeks ago, my son and I visited the De Young Museum in San Francisco. We spent some time admiring the gold and extravagance of Ramses II, an ancient Pharoah. As we were leaving the exhibit, we made our way down to the cafeteria. That's when I saw her.
She was a beautiful, grey-haired mature woman drinking her simple tea, looking relaxed and effortlessly graceful. In that moment, I suddenly realized that I no longer wanted to hide my own greying hair when it comes. Instead, I want to embrace the natural process of aging with grace and dignity. Because after all, there is nothing more beautiful than a mature woman who is confident and comfortable in her own skin.
The Transformation Can Be Gradual
The transformation can be done gradually without the harshness of grown-out roots and the embarrassment of feeling like a human "skunk". Using highlights is a great way to transition naturally and gradually add some silver streaks into your hair. You can start with just a few highlights around your face and then gradually add more as you get comfortable with the look.
Another option is to use lowlights instead of highlights. Lowlights are slightly darker than your natural hair color and can help blend in any grays that you may have. This technique can also be done gradually so that you can ease into your new look.
You Can Still Use Hair Dye If You Want To
Of course, you can always continue to use hair dye if you want to maintain your current hair color. There is no shame in that! Hair dye can actually be quite helpful in covering up those pesky grays. The key is to find a hair color that closely resembles your natural hair color. That way, it will be less noticeable when your roots start to grow out.
I never thought I would say this, but going gray is something that I am actually starting to look forward to. After seeing a beautiful grey-haired woman at the museum, I realized that there is something truly graceful and dignified about embracing the natural aging process. If you are thinking about making the switch to gray hair, know that there are ways to do it gradually without having to deal with awkward grown-out roots or feeling like a skunk. You can also still use hair dye if you want to maintain your current color. Whatever you decide, just know that there is beauty in confidence—no matter what your hair looks like!
